I don't know how much coverage this gets in your American media, but it's obviously on the front page everyday here in South Korea. This whole business started on one of our Friday (I think) beer and chicken delivery nights when breaking news came on the TV reporting that a warship, the Cheonan was sinking in the Yellow Sea. That was March 26th. It was pretty quiet until the investigation team came on TV to blame the North.
In the past week or two, the situation has been escalating. I got an email from the Canadian Embassy telling me that the danger level has not changed, but just in case, they sent evacuation and emergency preparedness information. http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/korea...e.aspx?lang=eng

Hah. I feel that same way about going to America. Which is why I plan to never visit there. You guys have a bigger risk of attack from terrorists or your own gangs than Koreans ever had.
This is the safest country you can be in. People leave their shit (including computers, phones, ipods) lying around while they go to the bathroom in cafes and have nothing stolen. And, your biggest chance of violence is if you get in a fight with a drunk salaryman.
Let me be clear, there is no "climate" of anything. North Korea is never considered a risk to regular citizens.

Depends on which part of the US you're talking about. I kind of doubt we have any real risk of terrorist attacks or gangs around the Northwest. I kind of wish Oregon and Washington would just break off from the rest of the country and have our own little thing going on.
I wouldn't be afraid to go to South Korea though.

yeah, i think you have a pretty big misconception of america. about the thefts,
i know i've for certain worried about leaving things around in public
places, but I think it has more to do with media sensationalism
of crime than actual crime i've seen. I mean, unless you're in a pretty shady place,
it would take a lot for regular customers to go and take
your things if you go to the bathroom. that's not to say there
aren't dousches around.
but it's funny because i remember a while ago,
someone interviewed me for a class project and they asked
about national security and I really felt that this country
is one of the safest in the world in that sense. but you're right,
america is also a big target.
I've read from koreans in the paper and people i know in korea,
and yea, everyone says it's not a big deal. but as someone pointed
out, the north does have crazy leaders and you never know what
could happen. I have an ominous feeling something bad is going
to happen soon...
I submitted my application to the teaching program and I'll
see what happens. there are a few practical reasons (money issues,
school loans, etc.) why i probably shouldn't
go, but i hate that this had to come up in the media to get another
doubt into my head. I don't even know korean and I thought I was ready
for a year of that cultural shock and now i get this in my head. I almost
hope they don't accept me so that I don't have
to decide for myself.

I have a very biased view of America, as I was raised to believe you are bad people. But, media is a big reason for my lack of desire to visit your country.
