Yeah I don't know what got into me, I was just being impatient and barreled into it. I'm convincing myself that this OSX86 stuff really isn't that difficult, it's the trying to gather all the information together that causes the headaches. Seriously I am looking through data about MBR installations and they are all out of date and not matching with what I'm seeing in my files.

Quantic Dream, the French game developer behind Omikron: The Nomad Soul, Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain, absolutely floored me with this conceptual demo which is supposedly running in real-time on a PS3. Now I won't spoil the video by describing it, just suffice it to say that it's stunning to look at and is both affecting and beautiful.

QD has had a pretty good track record, IMO. Despite the Dreamcast version being kinda crappy I actually liked Omikron back in the day. It had great atmosphere. Recently, I grabbed Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy from GOG for six bucks and thoroughly enjoyed that as well... even if the plot did get stupid at times. As for Heavy Rain, it's still on my list of games to get but I've read good things. So all that said, and if this tech demonstration is any indication, then, man, I honestly can't wait to see what these guys have in store for us next!

Like a month or so ago, the city I live in got insane rain, and a good portion of it flooded. All of the north/south streets in my neighborhood were rivers - overflowing past the curb with water.

My basement flooded. I happen to keep my file server in the basement, and I also happen to be stupid enough to have the thing sitting on the ground. Lost 4 drives, 2 of which were quite important. 4TB of data gone. Not all of it terribly important, but some of it is over 10 years old. All of everything, basically. The drives are at a data recovery company; I'm supposed to hear back within the next few days as to the status of my case.

In your case, this is why you back up your partition map before mucking with it! In theory, your filesystems weren't actually destroyed, just the information about where they start/end. I've done this a few times, actually. It's always a pain in the ass to recover from (either spend a very long time looking for the offset/length of your partitions, or just point file recovery software at it and hope for the best).

Moral: just get a cheap drive and put your "I'm not sure how this will work!" OS on that one, completely separate from everything else!

Or: don't store your file server on the floor of your basement that happens to be prone to flooding in heavy rain.

Edit: These days, OSX on generic PC hardware with good driver support is fantastic.

So, I still haven't learned. I have a terabyte drive that was probably 3/4ths full. Last weekend I decide that I'm going to give OSX86 out again - there's been OSX updates, BIOS updates, I'm more tech savvy, I can probably do it this time.

Well, avoiding the technical part, my drive was previously set up with the ability to house Windows and Mac partitions. I install OSX on one of the partitions, boot it up, and my main FAT32 drive has disappeared. Ok, I think, at least I have my other drive with my personal things. I should probably back them up one of these days, but it's OK.
I install OSX again (this is normal with OSX86) and my other partition is gone.

So I have the drive repartitioned again, and some recovery software, and I'm debating what is actually worth restoring. It's such a pain trying to find my data, I recover images and it spits out every image ever with no filename hierarchy into one big pool.

So share your stories here about hard drive problems. What software have you used? Years ago I would be pretty upset, but with torrents and clouds, I'm not sure that I even care to try and recover any collections I made. I can just find it again. I'm a little sad that my iTunes stats are gone, but it's kind of liberating. I had days of audio that I was never going to listen to in there, and days more waiting to be imported indefinitely.
I think the most upsetting is that I had written in some text files, the smallest and easiest to backup, that I have no idea how I will find them with recovery software.

I remember trying to watch Spirited Away with my parents. And I spent a full 10 minutes trying to get my mom to understand that "bath house" had nothing to do with sex in the slightest, most especially in the case of the movie, but in general that the idea of bathing in a public facility did not, in fact, imply that all attendants were participating in an orgy of epic proportions, commissioned by the Devil Himself.

That was the first time that I realized it's not worth bothering with what other people think of what I'm interested in, especially with regards to foreign culture and the average US citizen's view of it.

Clearly if there's any remote chance of some sort of possible sexual fetishization, that's the only possible answer/outcome. Because everyone in the world is as obsessed with sex as pure and perfect Christians are.

I think there's two very different sides to that.

In the West? Absolutely.

And that's exactly the reason I have a problem with this poster�\because it does then take something that I truly (naively or correctly) do not think is sexualized, and uses it specifically for creating in Westerners that connection to sexual fetishes. Of course somebody in the West is going to see this and make that connection, because in our society a person dressed in such a way is often associated with such things.

How I see it is, it's taking something that is genuinely innocent and using it to relate to a question of sexual perversion without any concern for how that original element is going to be perceived. It's like... in Japan, parents often bathe with their younger children, right? Here in the West, we don't do that, but they do over there and there's nothing sexual about it. What if you took this shot from My Neighbor Totoro...

I am bothered because most Westerners aren't going to understand the whole concept of EGL fashion, and making connections to it like this only serve to cause less understanding.

I don't see a problem with the poster. It's a pretty lady in a fashion so out there that it's perceived more as a costume to your average person. Here's what me, someone who has cursory familiarity with the fashion, sees: an attractive woman trying to co-opt a child-like image, "dolled up" to the degree it looks like fetish wear. Because most people don't look like this unless it's Halloween or in the bedroom. They would make a similar point if it was a woman in Catholic school girl uniform (though, granted, the majority of those are in their teens. Not quite pedophile range.).

I made a comment on Facebook once about a Hatsune Miku picture. I said she looked very classy in her uniform. Which is what I meant, I just thought it looked cool on her. My wife thought she looked like some guy's fantasy object and equated it to a sexy schoolgirl Halloween costume. I, someone very familiar with the aesthetic, had been desensitized to the style and didn't even consider that view (though, yes, most if not all of Miku's outfits are created to appeal to male sexuality).

I mean, to what degree can you hold someone responsible for how they feel about your fashion. If you're wearing yoga pants I'm going to notice your form, but I'm going to try to be respectful to your face. There's really no way you can change what's going through my head. You have to accept that that is how you are perceived and either stand proud or change.

I saw in that petition message that it isn't related to age play...well, maybe not for you, but for others, yes it is. That teacher/schoolgirl dynamic goes back decades and predates your fashion. Now, you may be upset that it has been seemingly co-opted, but I do not understand how you can deny that the connection does exist. Now, if you want to make the argument that in these cases, it's consenting adults performing roles and not actual pedophilia, then I completely agree, but that doesn't seem to be the point this petition is looking to make in the short paragraph provided.

I'm curious as to what this movie is really about. Is it a defense of pedophilia? Is it the argument that since most men have these fantasies such as the one mentioned above that they'd like to act out that in turn defines them as pedophiles at heart? Without knowing the subject matter or connection to the film, I cannot say if it's appropriate or not. Though I am more inclined to believe that it's simply putting a titillating image on the cover/poster to draw people in despite a non-existent or tenuous connection to the subject. Which again, would just support the idea that it's ALREADY sexualized.

...or, at least, that's kind of what this promotional material feels like.

The image is for a documentary called "Are All Men Pedophiles?" (which, by the way, seems to be saying "yes and no"), and this is one of the promotional posters. While the image isn't exactly saying that EGL fashion is tied to pedophilia, that outfit looks very, very similar\and for people who aren't really up on the fashion trend, it will no doubt make a connection should people see this and then an example of the fashion.

I don't 100% think the filmmaker was trying to make that connection, but he still did, and it makes me rather angry. EGL fashion in the West can already be somewhat misunderstood, and this will only make that worse.

For example, a petition was set up to try to get the filmmaker to stop using this poster, and this message was one of the messages posted there:

I don't fully understand it myself. It started as a request for someone else I know to draw "a frowning girl." He's a lazy though, so even though he said he'd draw it, it's been almost a year and nothing. So every time I've asked him if he's drawn it yet, the request has gotten something added to it. The full request is quite specific and long. Since he keeps not drawing it, I've started asking other people to draw it. So far, Finch has been the only taker!

PilotWings is what I played, too! I was pretty impressed with the fact that the 3D display really was 3D, but after using it, it does seem a bit gimmicky.

I hope there's more augmented reality games for it, and the upcoming new PSP (whatever it's being called). That's fun stuff!

I had the headache for PilotWings, but i think it's because they didn't have any restraint with the 3-D effect. You can totally turn the 3-D off and the games will still look good. I'm still kind of thinking this will be drastically less successful than the 1DS.

But the 3DS is TOTALLY AMAZING!!!1 I finally got to play with one for about two minutes the other day. Aside from the monster headache it gave me, and the fact that the 3D effect only worked on a portion of the screen unless the distance/angle were JUST perfect, it's TOTALLY AWESOME.

i'm banned from TNL and was feeling nostalgic. I remember good times here, Dunlap, and Codi was here, and Alan_fatima posted sometimes, and Pitch, and that guy who made threads about weekly animé releases, and i said "pocchari" and "pawg" a lot, completely ignorant of what "pawg" even meant, and you and i had tablet sketch wars... those were good times.

I think Compass followed me because i messaged him on his page.

The server is up-to-date. It's not hosted at the old IP address though (it was at 69.168.48.10 or 69.168.48.11 before). If anyone does want to log back in, it's up and running 24x7, and the server is even in a hosting facility. PM/email/IM myself or Shidoshi if you want the new hostname/address.
