I don't fully understand it myself. It started as a request for someone else I know to draw "a frowning girl." He's a lazy though, so even though he said he'd draw it, it's been almost a year and nothing. So every time I've asked him if he's drawn it yet, the request has gotten something added to it. The full request is quite specific and long. Since he keeps not drawing it, I've started asking other people to draw it. So far, Finch has been the only taker!

PilotWings is what I played, too! I was pretty impressed with the fact that the 3D display really was 3D, but after using it, it does seem a bit gimmicky.

I hope there's more augmented reality games for it, and the upcoming new PSP (whatever it's being called). That's fun stuff!

I had the headache for PilotWings, but i think it's because they didn't have any restraint with the 3-D effect. You can totally turn the 3-D off and the games will still look good. I'm still kind of thinking this will be drastically less successful than the 1DS.

But the 3DS is TOTALLY AMAZING!!!1 I finally got to play with one for about two minutes the other day. Aside from the monster headache it gave me, and the fact that the 3D effect only worked on a portion of the screen unless the distance/angle were JUST perfect, it's TOTALLY AWESOME.

i'm banned from TNL and was feeling nostalgic. I remember good times here, Dunlap, and Codi was here, and Alan_fatima posted sometimes, and Pitch, and that guy who made threads about weekly animé releases, and i said "pocchari" and "pawg" a lot, completely ignorant of what "pawg" even meant, and you and i had tablet sketch wars... those were good times.

The server is up-to-date. It's not hosted at the old IP address though (it was at 69.168.48.10 or 69.168.48.11 before). If anyone does want to log back in, it's up and running 24x7, and the server is even in a hosting facility. PM/email/IM myself or Shidoshi if you want the new hostname/address.

It's hard to find reason to explore if you know there's really nothing "new" to find. I've also found mining to be a waste of time, since stone tools really aren't that slow and the time spent searching for diamonds is probably a lot longer. Building a house might be fun, but you really can't do anything with a sitting room or a bedroom or a closet or anything else you'd typically think of that influences a real-life structure. That's why I've turned to creating strange, fantastical things. I try to figure out what the limits are of shapes and then use them in unconventional ways. I think next I'll build a house incorporating more doors into the design.

Here's some stuff I built on a multiplayer server recently.
I made a curvy house with a topiary:

I have the inside set up so light passes softly through the walls. Light can go through "transparent" blocks, which include pretty much anything that doesn't fill a whole block up, like stairs.

Today, I listen to Utada's This is the One. There's a thread for it here, but I'll post comments in this thread since I'm talking to myself.

Wow, she fixed everything I critiqued on Exodus. She ditched the Japanese-y riffs and lyrics, and the lyrics are a lot more accessible. Come Back to Me, Apple and Cinnamon, and This One all get that "lost love" concept across well. Her sexy songs Dirty Desire and Poppin' are a lot more alluring than her Exodus album. I think the most awkward lyric I heard was she used the verb "photoshopped". So it's interesting that we universally panned this when it came out.

I think the biggest hurdle with this album is, sadly, Utada's voice. She has a warble that you simply don't hear in American music, and, like the guitar from Devil Inside, if you can't accept it, you won't be able to get into the music. Interestingly, though, I didn't notice it in Simple and Clean and Passion, the two English adaptations of her Japanese songs. So maybe when we say "she should just adapt her Japanese sound", it's because she doesn't sound so weird in that style. I hate to write it off to genetics, but against the divas in American she sounds passive and trembling.

Musically, I'm not a fan of the keyboard clap sound. Sparingly, it's fine. But most of the tracks have a clap-sound in their main rhythm. I think the melodies are pretty solid, Utada's pretty good at that, but I wonder if there's too much going on around the melodies that they're not getting muddled up. I think a simpler, cleaner sound (music and vocals) would've worked better overall. I don't like that the Japanese stuff is just pasted on the end of this album, and On and On is not a good song to end on/transition to the Japanese stuff.

Baby Come Back to Me drones on badly, but I love Apple and Cinnamon, Dirty Desire, and Poppin'. On and On is really fun, but the clapping and "yeah!"s really hamper it. Taking My Money Back is solid, it really uses that synth well. Automatic Part II, well, I don't hate it, but I wouldn't miss it. It and Baby Come Back to Me are the worst of the bunch.

Overall, I think I like Exodus over this. I pretty much ignore the last three tracks on here, subtract the two worst songs and I'm left with eight songs I like to various degrees. Exodus has some transitional stuff and bad songs, but I'd say ten of them were worthwhile. And some of those are really strong. Devil Inside and Kremlin Dusk rank up there as some of her best work, and there's just nothing like that on This is the One. It does have a more consistent sound, for what that's worth, but I guess I prefer the eclectic. All in all, I don't think this deserved as poor a reception as we gave it. I think she shines better doing the mellow pop stuff on Ultra Blue and Heart Station, but this modern R&B stuff, while rougher, still carries a nice groove.

I just listened to this again after a long while. I didn't leave comments here before to compare with, but I feel like my opinions have changed over time about this. So amuse me while I delve into this album 7 years after the fact, heh.

This album has a few things that make it hard to get into. The lyrics, of course, are off-putting, but a lot of that is tied up in the Japanization of the music. I need to re-listen to Utada's other work, but this album had a lot of Asian-sounding string samples that I felt forced an "exotic" flavor, but in a generic way. Ultimately, I think this exoticism alienates the listener, and is more detracting musically than the canned drum. I know it's kind of Timbaland's schtick, and in theory it seems perfect, but the sample in Exodus '04 just doesn't work for me (unrelated, it kinda sounds like his sample for "Big Pimpin'").

The lyrics, oh God. There's a couple gems in here, but there's a whole lot more "what the hell" parts. I don't know where her head was at, being the biggest pop star in Japan must have inflated it, because there's no reason for throwaway shit like "she's got a new microphone" and "five freckles running up and down my spine {awesome} / can you hold on someone's calling on the other line - I'm back {shit}". She admitted in an interview she was playing around with a new microphone and thought the lyric sounded fun, so she put it in. Inspiration comes in many ways, sure, but this time and in many other parts in this album it comes off like placeholder material that she never got around to finishing. The lyrics also suffer from trying to be "exotic", just like the music. Her talk of "crossing over" and "mixing gene pools" emphasizes how she's different from her audience, it doesn't bring the two together. Finally, her style of writing is very personal, and again, it serves to distance herself from the casual listener. She gives little snippets like "daddy, don't be mad that I'm leaving" that paint a huge picture in your head. Her sexy songs should be about how hot she is and how all the boys want her, but instead she writes how she once danced with a Texan and having an affair with a married man. Maybe my fanaticism makes this a lot more noticeable to me, because a phrase like "is it okay that I'm not cute and naive?" probably won't register with a casual listener, but for me it brings up a picture of her Japanese husband and traditional Japanese gender roles, and how gender roles affect their relationship, despite them both living inside and outside the Japanese world. But it's things like that that make a song like About Me come off as a song written for someone specific, not like, say, Justin Bieber's song Baby, a song about a first crush, a generic type of relationship that everyone can identify with.

Now, I love that last part. It's one of the big reasons I like this album. If she wanted a well-received, sexy, dance song, she shouldn't have written Tippy Toe, a song detailing an affair with a family man that leaves you feeling dirty, but not in that bass-heavy club song way. But it's that exact quirky specificity that gets to me as a fan, because I feel like I'm being clued into her intimate feelings, however vaguely. Lyrics like that, though, will not work if you want to be mainstream!

So, a few more notes. Devil Inside makes the best use of the Japanese-y instruments, but the electric guitar is grating and while I enjoy it, I don't see how it could have had much success on a chart.

I really dig the intro drum sound for The Workout, it has a good dirty sound that unfortunately I don't think is reflected as well as it could be with the other sounds.

Easy Breezy isn't as bad as I remember, but that it's still not that good, either. I think she tried hard to make it sound poppy, but the sounds have an irritating quality like the guitar in Devil Inside. There's just something off that makes it hard to get into.

I realized that Hotel Lobby really sounds like her album Ultra Blue. I'd never noticed before, it's kind of neat to hear this "prototype".

Animato sounds a lot like other Hikki stuff, I can't place it just yet, though. It definitely sounds the most polished of the album.

Kremlin Dusk: what is this song doing here? It's a good song, but it's so... unlike everything else she's done. If she went back to this and extrapolated it to a rock album, that would be great. Definitely suffers from the canned instruments.
