I know I'm late to this, but I think echan has a point.
It doesn't make sense to keep raising the prices
on things as if media entertainment is just like
every other business. The more people download,
the higher the prices go, and the more people
download.

While I don't think lower prices would end piracy,
I do think it would definitely increase sales
and maybe add some value back to
physical things so that people would pay
for slightly more money after that.
As was mentioned, it IS much to do with
perception. The newer generations are become
completely digital; I fear it the most with books.
But then they don't even read books so I don't know...

I guess I worked backwards. I was a LastFM stalwart first, but after work blocked that site, I switched over to Pandora. While I'm not looking for the foreign stuff probably nearly as much as you, I did find them a helpful way to learn about lesser known non-mainstream American acts that I normally wouldn't have found. So, I think it's a grand service quite frankly. And if you know how to play it, can tweak your stations pretty well to get what you're looking for. It may not be as straight forward as lastfm's multiple artist stations they used to allow, but since they removed that years ago, I pretty much only use them on my 360 anymore.

I remember reading about what a cool idea the service was going to be long long ago, and tried it -- and was disappointed, but made it a point to try it again about every year or so.

I was super excited when they finally managed to add some content from Ayumi Hamasaki, but it was so few titles. And after a few years they haven't gotten much more -- nor anything that matches her style well.

I've been streaming last.fm on my Droid -- I've been meaning to try other steaming services, but last.fm already "knows" what I like, so I haven't tried any others on my phone.

A very long time ago (more than five years, if I recall correctly), I found Pandora and liked the idea, but was disappointed at their lack of selection outside of mainstream US artists. So I wrote them an email, telling them how much I liked the service, but had never really had a problem finding new, popular music from American artists; I really wanted a way to find new music, particularly foreign stuff. I got a reply from ... it was either the guy that started the company, or someone close to that position, and he said that while they really wanted to do something like that, just being able to continue streaming popular American music was a huge struggle for them, and they didn't see expansion coming any time in the near future. After that point, I don't think I've spent more than about 10 minutes straight using Pandora. :\

I'd heard of it a long time ago, before I knew last.fm did custom streaming. I've known people who loved it, but I hear that it's selection is very lacking and that last.fm is where it's at these days. I never used either, though, I have enough to listen to already.

So I, like many here, have used Last.fm for a long time now. But with Apple continually (as of late) talking about Pandora and how you can now use it in the background on the iPhone, I've been like, "what is this Pandora thing?"

Anybody use it? I did a quick artist search via the main site, and could find none of the Asian artists that I enjoy, while such artists are easily discoverable on Last.fm. If anybody does use it, am I just doing it wrong, or is its knowledge of Asian artists severely limited?

I know, I've done some of it myself.
But I've seen 3d modeling in other Japanese
PVs, and it's about the same quality (one
off the top of my head is in Gackt's Tsuki no Uta
which is at least 5 years old and looks just like this
one). It's just weird because of how
big Japan is in the video game industry, and how
big these pop acts are, and yet they can't
get a decent modeler.
I guess the market
doesn't mind
it too much
if at
all.

Well, we're back now, and thanks for the info on Portland. We actually skipped over Seattle and headed out into the woods.
We spent the night at the Lake Crescent Lodge, and it was fantastic. The hiking in the area was one on the coolest walks I've ever been on.
After that, we headed to Cape Flattery -- which was super cool, and the Beach at La Push, Washington. I definitely want to go back someday -- and make a big-ass bonfire with the plentiful wood on the beach (I think I can do it with only a saw, and a small camping stove). I'll probably post pictures on facebook.

And honestly, Portland seemed to have much more character than Seattle. We had less than 24 hours in Portland, and definitely plan on going back there soon. But next time, I'll take waterproof shoes!

yeah, i think you have a pretty big misconception of america. about the thefts,
i know i've for certain worried about leaving things around in public
places, but I think it has more to do with media sensationalism
of crime than actual crime i've seen. I mean, unless you're in a pretty shady place,
it would take a lot for regular customers to go and take
your things if you go to the bathroom. that's not to say there
aren't dousches around.

but it's funny because i remember a while ago,
someone interviewed me for a class project and they asked
about national security and I really felt that this country
is one of the safest in the world in that sense. but you're right,
america is also a big target.

I've read from koreans in the paper and people i know in korea,
and yea, everyone says it's not a big deal. but as someone pointed
out, the north does have crazy leaders and you never know what
could happen. I have an ominous feeling something bad is going
to happen soon...

I submitted my application to the teaching program and I'll
see what happens. there are a few practical reasons (money issues,
school loans, etc.) why i probably shouldn't
go, but i hate that this had to come up in the media to get another
doubt into my head. I don't even know korean and I thought I was ready
for a year of that cultural shock and now i get this in my head. I almost
hope they don't accept me so that I don't have
to decide for myself.

You guys have a bigger risk of attack from terrorists or your own gangs than Koreans ever had.

Depends on which part of the US you're talking about. I kind of doubt we have any real risk of terrorist attacks or gangs around the Northwest. I kind of wish Oregon and Washington would just break off from the rest of the country and have our own little thing going on.

I wouldn't be afraid to go to South Korea though.

You guys have a bigger risk of attack from terrorists or your own gangs than Koreans ever had.

This is the safest country you can be in. People leave their shit (including computers, phones, ipods) lying around while they go to the bathroom in cafes and have nothing stolen. And, your biggest chance of violence is if you get in a fight with a drunk salaryman.

Let me be clear, there is no "climate" of anything. North Korea is never considered a risk to regular citizens.

I was being
held up, waiting for the second recommendation letter
i needed. The deadline is june 15th, and I think i'll know by the end of the month or sometime
in july if i'm accepted.
I feel underqualified, and that i am submitting the application closer to the
deadline doesn't help. Really, i only have my bachelor's (just got it in march),
and two semesters of tutoring experience at the college. I'm hoping to use
my experience as an immigrant learning a second language in america and
my ambitions as a fiction writer to distinguish myself a bit.

what are you over there for?

Koreans don't really worry about war anymore.

The North has been posturing for years. Neither government actually wants a war. Especially the North. They couldn't afford it. Also, Kim Jong-Il is dying, and he is trying to slide his son into position as a legitimate military leader. This can't be done unless South Korean blood has been drawn. They are maneuvering their Navy like they are going to attack, and setting up along the DMZ to give a perception of firepower. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Kim Jong-Il silently passes the helm over to one of his sons before this is over.

The South / USFK are also posturing by having Naval exercises and live-fire exercises near the DMZ. The South Korean government doesn't want to put up with the bullshit anymore, so they need to remind the North (and the citizens of the South) that the combined firepower of the the forces could level Pyongyang in an evening.

Many Koreans also feel that the result of this investigation also coincides too coincidentally with the election in June. If Lee Myung-bak's (the President) party can diffuse the situation, and show enough strength in the face of adversity, it will give them a lot of credibility. Further, to most citizens the US Army is not welcome in Korea, and they also need an event which will support their cause in the face of plans to scale back the troop size and hand over full control to the South Korean government.

Military

Every Korean male must complete two years of military service before they turn thirty. So, yes everyone is trained. Further, every year (up to a certain age), men must return for compulsory training. Every man is a reserve.

When this training is happening, flags go up all along major streets which read "민방위" - Civil Defense. It reminds people of their safety. Also, on some bridges, or at the entrance to certain districts or "Gu" (Japanese, -ku) there are flags which mark this location as being loyal to the Republic of Korea (South Korea) in case of war.

Many of the sailors who served on the Cheonan were young men (18-30) serving their military service.

Shelters + Emergency plans

Designated shelters exist all over Korea and are marked by signs that say "대피소" (dae-pi-so). This includes all underground subway stations. I am sure there are evacuation procedures which I don't know about. Every 6 months or so, they have earthquake drills which simultaneously throughout Seoul cars are stopped, sirens go off, and police commanders take over the radio. I am sure this system would be used in wartime.

Also..

There is a hotline, 111, which you call if you suspect someone is a spy or a threat to national security. It scrolls every so often on the subway displays.

Something I missed? I don't know everything, and I will ask about the emergency plans.

Yeah, we hear some stuff, but not much at all.

I've been wondering what the general population of Seoul is doing...
Are people packing up and heading south?
If so, are they doing so to "go visit relatives" or flat out saying "I'm getting out of here!"
and if it is happening, is it to the extent that companies are shutting down?

How does the military work there?
Is everyone trained to fight (like in Israel)?
Are there 'reserves'? have they been called up yet?

What about the equivalent of a "Civil Defense?"
Bomb shelters?
Are there set plans in place? (everyone should have a 'kit' with the following items:____")

Registering with your embassy is a good idea -- they will work to get you out. I recall hearing how the Swedish government used SMS to get people out of Beirut during the last attacks. The cool part is they somehow found a way to broadcast messages to anyone in the area that was roaming back to a Swedish carrier -- so even tourists who hadn't registered would get the message.

Here's the email:

QUOTEDear Canadian Citizen,

In May 2010, a multinational investigation team concluded that North Korea (DPRK) was responsible for the sinking of a South Korean warship resulting in 46 casualties. The evolving political response is likely to cause even greater inter-Korean tensions, which could escalate into other forms of confrontation. This situation has been extensively covered by international news media over the last week.

For the moment, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada has not changed the risk level for the two countries nor released any official warning. The Canadian Embassy to Korea is closely monitoring the situation and will advise the Canadian community in Korea of developments as required. As the situation evolves, you are advised to consult the Travel Report for South Korea for up-to-date information.

Canadians are encouraged to maintain their level of readiness to cope with any emergency situation. It is recommended that:

you ensure that your travel documents, including your passport, are valid;
you have registered with the online Registry of Canadians Abroad (ROCA) and/or updated your registration with your latest information.

Please see the weblinks below for additional information:

Travel report-up-to-date information about Korea
http://www.voyage.gc.ca/countries_pays/rep...g.asp?id=153000

Registry of Canadians Abroad
https://www.voyage2.gc.ca/Registration_insc...nDsAOImpW8w6161

How to obtain a passport
http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/korea...t.aspx?lang=eng

Emergency evacuation
http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/korea...e.aspx?lang=eng

http://www.voyage.gc.ca/faq/evacuations-eng.asp

We hope that this information will be helpful to you,

Your Consular team

Embassy of Canada
I don't know how much coverage this gets in your American media, but it's obviously on the front page everyday here in South Korea. This whole business started on one of our Friday (I think) beer and chicken delivery nights when breaking news came on the TV reporting that a warship, the Cheonan was sinking in the Yellow Sea. That was March 26th. It was pretty quiet until the investigation team came on TV to blame the North.

In the past week or two, the situation has been escalating. I got an email from the Canadian Embassy telling me that the danger level has not changed, but just in case, they sent evacuation and emergency preparedness information. http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/korea...e.aspx?lang=eng

Important things:

- Four North Korean subs disappear from satellite imgery http://bit.ly/dtXbnP (Yonhap News)

- North Korean soldiers told to get ready for combat http://bit.ly/96PV4R (Chosun Ilbo)

- North Korea plans to cancel non-aggression agreement http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/asia_pacific/10160187.stm (BBC)

- Seoul to resume propaganda broadcasts with huge speakers along the DMZ - http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100525/ap_on_...orea_ship_sinks

Hmm.... I haven't done much actual swimming at the beaches out here. Wading and splashing yes, but the water is almost always really cold, so actual swimming takes a dedicated swimmer.

I was actually just looking up hot springs in Oregon, and thinking about taking a trip to a nearby one sometime this summer. It's a little ways outside of Portland, but if you didn't mind the drive I'm sure it would be pretty as you would definitely be driving through some forest area. This is the one I was thinking of going to: http://oregonhotsprings.immunenet.com/bagby.htm

Multnomah Falls is a pretty waterfall just outside of Portland. http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/columbia/recreation/waterfalls.shtml

Silver Falls is a pretty awesome little park with a bunch of waterfalls that you can hike around. It's about an hour south of Portland (pretty close to where we live). http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_211.php

My friend suggested some things in Seattle... She said there's a cool Asian area (Japantown/Chinatown) with a lot of cool shops, Volunteer Park has free botanical gardens and a good view of the city, Pike's Place Market is a big tourist attraction (outdoor market, fresh seafood, lots of shopping stuff), if you want to go to a zoo - go to Woodland Park Zoo, Pacific Science Center (kind of geared toward kids, but still fun), and she said be sure to ride the SLUT.

If you don't have hotel rooms booked for the whole week, and you're looking for something a little different, http://www.mcmenamins.com/ is an interesting Pacific Northwest based chain of hotels, pubs, breweries, wineries, and distilleries. Even if you don't stay the night at one, they're all very unique and interesting and often housed in historical buildings. I think most of the hotels are in and around Portland, but there are pubs all around Oregon and possibly some in Washington as well.

If you do make it down to Portland, and especially if you make it all the way out to Silver Falls, feel free to get a hold of us if you want to go for dinner or something. Echan has his cell phone number on Facebook so you could call or text.

Whatever you guys end up doing, have fun! Plan for rain, as it has been raining a bit off and on. It might be sunny next week, but you really never know. And if you want to look like a local, don't use an umbrella!
